Stephen Douglas Birthplace

The restoration of the Stephen A. Douglas Birthplace converted a house into office spaces, a museum space and a tourism information space. The building was made handicap accessible to the first floor and a new handicap accessible bathroom was added. Much of the work involved the restoration of historical windows, doors and plaster finishes, all in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. The existing baseboard radiation was replaced with streamline Runtal baseboard and gas fired fireplace inserts and the building was completely rewired per modern electrical code.
