Igloo House - Private Residence

The Igloo House is located in West Dover, VT with a commanding view of Mount Snow Ski area. Originally designed by the late John Black Lee and then constructed in the early 1960’s, the Igloo House was featured in the December 16, 1963 issue of Sports Illustrated as an innovative architectural solution to accommodating 14 (and more) skiers the house is truly unique in every way.

After over 50 ski seasons of use with little maintenance (the original design was in part focused on durable finishes) and an ever growing family it was time to update the existing Igloo House and add on a little over 2,000 SF of space. Keith Dewey of Dewey and Associates Architects and Planners rose to the task of designing the added space while preserving the architecture of the original house and he hit it out of the park.

The existing house was updated to current electrical standards, improved thermal efficiency and heating system as well as updating the finishes.

The new addition seamlessly incorporates an added great room called “The Point” which includes a contemporary fireplace and full service bar which opens out onto spacious mahogany decks at the main level and connects to a lower level patio cast in brick red concrete.

The lower level provides a large open locker room for ski equipment and apparel, two new spacious bathrooms, a sauna, added bedroom and mechanical / laundry room.
